I have recently started playing piano at a retirement living centre in the care centre side. On this side of the building more than half of the residents have some form of dementia. When I arrive it is generally very quiet, nobody talks to each other, some seem bored. I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to hear the residents start to chat once I start to play. I usually play a mix of classical pieces, pop and pieces that they would also recognize from their time. By the end of my time there the residents begin to talk to me more and are more upbeat. Music is such a powerful medicine that I think everybody needs on a daily basis.
